Universal’s profitable dust devil may have found its commander for a third globetrotting adventure. THE MUMMY 3—which lost the first two entries’ writer/director Stephen Sommers to other endeavors like the WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE redux—may have snared director Rob Cohen, according to TMZ. An obvious call, in retrospect, given Cohen’s history with the studio on THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, not to mention his creature-filled 8TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD adventure that got kiboshed last year at Columbia. Over the years since 2001’s THE MUMMY RETURNS, both franchise stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have expressed an interest in returning to the series, and JURASSIC PARK III’s Joe Johnston was in line to direct; TMZ says we can expect an official announcement about Cohen from Universal to come any day now. No word yet on whether the SMALLVILLE creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar’s script, which reimagines (?!) Sommers’ original 1999 film, will be used.
