Fango caught up with Jeff Buhler, the scribe of Clive Barker’s upcoming MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN and writer/director of the just-wrapped feature INSANITARIUM, who gave Fango the skinny on his next film project, THE HELL WITHIN. “I’m currently writing the screenplay,” Buhler tells Fango, “and it will be directed by the brilliant Brazilian filmmaker Dennison Ramalho and produced by Benito Mueller for [Swiss production company] Barry Films.”
Describing the project as “a cross between ROSEMARY’S BABY and DEAD RINGERS told in the context of macumba witchcraft,” Buhler says the film’s story (which he, Ramalho and Mueller dreamed up) “is somewhat difficult to describe. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen or attempted to write before, and I have loved every minute of it.” Nonetheless, Buhler takes a stab at a synopsis: “THE HELL WITHIN follows a career-driven New Yorker named Maria who’s beginning to feel like she has missed the window to have children,” he reveals. “She and her husband David have been trying for years [to conceive], but stress from work and aging seem to have taken their toll. Maria’s quickly approaching a serious emotional meltdown when one day the phone rings—it’s a little girl calling, and she sounds like she’s in trouble. In an effort to find out who this girl is and hopefully help her, Maria and David decide to fly to Brazil, the origin of the haunting phone calls, but what they find there is much more than they bargained for.”
