NOVELISING THE MASSACRE
Film novelizations are groovy for two reasons. Often, authors of these books work from scripts that contain succulent chunks of scenes not found in the final theatrical product (see the Alien 3 paperback by Alan Dean Foster, just to name one title that contained a vast amount of eventually excised material). And the other reason? It’s solely founded on bragging rights. You get the full skinny on all the plot developments before the movie is released. Of the same token though, there’s little surprise to be found in the plot details when you actually see the movie in the theater. That’s the price you pay for trying to be a know-it-all, huh?
Whichever stance you take on movie-to-grocery store paperback adaptations, I think little harm will be found when the novelization of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake arrives in stores this fall. We all (hopefully) know the story by now, right? Kids go on a road trip, pick up a gnarly hitchhiker, and an almost blood-free massacre ensues when they arrive at a house inhabited by cannibals. Familiar stuff.
If you head on over to the Evilshop right now you can pre-order the Texas novelization penned by Stephen Hand who also had a, um, hand in writing the paperback for that other New Line film Freddy vs. Jason. Published by Simon & Schuster, Amazon.com has the book listed for a December ’03 release. This is probably the result of New Line’s indecision to lock down a release date. But now that TCM is officially due October 17th we’ll probably see the novelization shortly after summer’s end.
UK publisher Titan Books is going to be releasing some of their own Texas-related reading material come January of ’04 (again, that could be different now) with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Companion (click here to pre-order). At 272 pages, the book – written by Stefan Jaworzyn – is fairly cheap, but we have no clue what the content will be like.
