TISCHMAN IN THE BITE CLUB
There are some horror comics out there that just sound like movie deals waiting to happen. Take 30 Days of Night for instance. Simple premise, unique voice…enter a multi-studio bidding war, one of the biggest names in horror, $1.5 million and you’ve got a deal!
Vertigo’s Bite Club doesn’t tread new waters with yet another title involving vampires on the market, but it seems writers Howard Chaykin and David Tischman have found their own way to turn the bloodsucker lore upside down that might just be cool enough to garner Hollywood attention. Rather than ground it in the supernatural, vampirism is treated as a disease very much like monkeypox or even SARS. In Bite Club the usual vamp rules need not apply.
‘This virus/condition means that our vampires are not the undead. They have a reflection, they can go to church.’ Tischman tells Newsarama. ‘Garlic does not bother them. What the virus does do however, it enhances human strength, prolongs the lifespan a great deal, and makes their eyes very sensitive to light they must wear sunglasses during the day, and weve somewhat fetishized the sunglasses to reflect that. Because it is a hormonal change, it can make them prone to bursts of violence.’
Inspired by the operatic drama of ’80s television shows like Dallas and Dynasty, Bite Club intertwines various story threads involving multigenerational families at odds with each other.
