Ireland, 1849. The Great Famine. As a church bell tolls and the gloaming descends, a father and son working the land are forced to confront an ancient evil. The Gloaming is the debut short horror film by award-winning, IFTA-nominated filmmakers Souljacker. It was written and directed by Sean Smith and is an atmospheric piece that owes as much to the eerie bogland captured by cinematographer Brian O’Brien (Souljacker) as it does to the chilling story of a father and son stalked by an ancient evil. And you can watch it below.
The Gloaming was shot entirely on location in Co. Cavan, Ireland with an original score by Choice Music Prize-winning musician Adrian Crowley. The short stars Cavan actors Kevin McGahern (the new presenter of RTÉ’s Republic of Telly), Tommy Sharkey (a leading player on Cavan’s amateur dramatics scene and star of forthcoming feature ‘Revenant’) and Kim McCafferty (Pat McCabe & Kevin Allen’s ‘The Ballad of Honky McSwaine’), with Eoin Heaney as ‘the fiend’ and was produced by Lauren Murphy.
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Sean Smith graduated from Ballyfermot College, Dublin with a Diploma in Film Operations and Production, and has since worked in a number of roles on music videos, shorts and feature film projects, as well as in live television with Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ. He is currently working with award-winning studio Brown Bag Films as a Post-Production Coordinator.
Sean’s first live action short ‘The Gloaming’ was funded by an Arts Act Grant and is currently touring the international festival circuit. He is currently working on the post-production of his debut feature film ‘Revenant’, which was shot on location in Co. Cavan and is due for release/completion in 2016.
