This February is women in horror month so we invited dating expert from SpeedDater, Dani Waller to dissect (no pun intended) her favourite relationships in horror! Horror fans, if you’re looking for some handy dating tips and expert advice you could do a lot worse from just taking a look at some of the most iconic relationships we’ve seen in the genre so far. And here are just a few examples.
THE SHINING (1980)
This film is a shining example of the bipolar confusion that is marriage. One day you can be enjoying each other’s company with a glass of wine on the couch, and the next your wondering how on earth you got stuck with the ball and chain in the first place. She starts nagging, the silent treatment and responding to everything with I’m fine. He doesn’t pick up after himself, walks dirt into the house and grunts answers at you from behind a screen. Sometimes it’s best to accept the little things don’t matter before one of you tries to blame a murder on the dog.
AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000)
In American Psycho, Patrick Bateman sees himself a cut above the rest. His inner monologue is so self-obsessed you’d wonder why he doesn’t just marry himself and be done with it. This breed of god complex is everywhere in the dating world. You know that guy with shirtless pictures, quoting GTL and looking for a girl to love him as much as he loves himself? He plays the field and generally doesn’t have much between the ears. Stay away ladies… that selfie together will always be pointed more at him than at you.
YOU’RE NEXT (2011)
You’re Next is a cautionary tale of Erin, who accompanies her fiancé to his family’s house for dinner… one by one the family members get killed off by a masked, arrow wielding stranger. Without giving too much away, the film shows the shark tank that is dinner with the in-laws/partners family.
To make it through, avoid religion, politics and the drunken grabby uncle (no you will not sit on his knee). Also, plan your exit strategy! Get a friend to call with an ‘emergency’ and if it’s all too much, bail for some much needed cocktails!
AUDITION (1999)
This Japanese cult horror film tells the story Shigeharu Aoyama, who after encouragement from his son and friend holds an audition to find his new wife. He is immediately enchanted by Asami Yamazaki, who is lovely at first, but could only be described as a stage 5 clinger.
With that in mind, you have full permission to FB/Instagram stalk any potential dates… to avoid the ones that make you want to delete your online existence and move to Alaska.
Dani can also be found at www.speeddater.co.uk where she is setting out to help lucky singles pick up good habits when it comes to catching someone’s eye or getting a second date. Dani has matched over 40,000 singles in the UK (in real life!) and now she is offering free 15 minute Skype consultations to help get single nerds back on their feet and out of the virtual world.
