LESTAT ONE STEP CLOSER TO BROADWAY
It hasn’t been a bad year for Anne Rice. Her publicity tour for the latest Vampire Chronicles entry, Blood Canticle, was a success – if you measure that by the amount of exposure she received the week of the book’s release. From CNN to Good Morning America, she was everywhere.
Rice’s brooding debonair vamps are also being revitalized in another artistic medium: the Broadway musical. News broke this May that songwriters Elton John and Bernie Taupin would be collaborating on a Broadway adaptation of Rice’s The Vampire Lestat.
The show is being readied to bathe the stage red with blood and melodrama in 2005; it will serve as the debut production for Warner Bros. Theatre Venture.
Playbill’s website heard through the grapevine that John, Taupin, and a small cast gave producers a ‘private reading’ of an early draft of the show. Jack Noseworthy (Event Horizon, Idle Hands) participated in the reading amongst a cast of seasoned Broadway talent like Steven Blanchard (Beauty and the Beast), James Barbour (Jane Eyre), and Max Von Essen who also appeared in the short-lived Broadway bloodsucker Dance of the Vampires.
The Vampire Lestat has received Rice’s blessing, it’s faithfulness to the source material is cloudy at best until further details are released. Elton has said that they’re avoiding the rock opera approach for something more ‘traditional.’
