EDMUND NEXT FOR GORDON?
Stuart Gordon’s gotta be the most patient man in the world. His segue into non-genre fare, King of the Ants, has been completed for well over a year. Courtesy of Blockbuster’s DEJ distrib label, Ants will finally get a chance to make a killin’ June 24th on home video.
Not content to rest on his ass and see how audiences will respond to his latest endeavor, Gordon has been flirting with a number of projects. Some have fallen through, does that deter the man from continuing onward? Nope. When the Creature Corner last heard from the writer/director he had completed a draft of Ladies’ Night with scribe Jack Ketchum and was aiming to begin production in New York City sometime last year. Obviously, that didn’t happen. Well, Creature Corner correspondent, Axl, packed her bags and hastily made for the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Film recently. Also in attendance, Stuart Gordon, naturally, who was there to pimp a screening of King of the Ants. Axl had a chance to go one-on-one with Gordon (for an interview!) who didn’t speak so much of Ladies’ Night as he did of another project outside of the horror realm…
‘I think I may end up doing a David Mamet project, called ‘Edmund,” Gordon reveals. ‘Our plan is to shoot it this summer in L.A. and William H.Macy is going to star in it. It’s not really a horror film, it’s not really a thriller, but it’s more of a psychological study. It’s the kind of project that takes years and years to get made, David Mamet wrote the script about 15 years ago, he hasn’t been able to get it produced because it’s very disturbing. The basic idea is that one of the characters says, ‘Every fear hides a wish, and the things we are most afraid of we secretly wish would happen.’ which is a great idea, I think it’s true. And that’s really what the movie’s about.’
Don’t let this dampen your spirits any, every director’s got to flex his talents outside of his accustomed genre at some point – and if King of the Ants is any indication, Gordon’s having a ball.
