HELSING WON’T HUNT AT NBC
Variety reports that TRANSYLVANIA, the supernatural drama series executive-produced by Stephen Sommers and set in the world of his theatrical VAN HELSING feature, has been dropped by NBC, which announced its team-up with Universal Network Television on the project last year. Despite the fact that Universal and NBC recently merged, executives at the latter reportedly decided that the series would be too expensive even before the two companies came together. Although NBCU entertainment president Jeff Zucker told the trade that the movie’s box office had no bearing on the decision, the fact that VAN HELSING has underperformed (it only squeaked past the $100-million mark this past Sunday, and that’s only if Universal’s estimate holds) no doubt has put the final nail in this situation’s coffin. NBCU is still developing a pilot script, however, and other networks are said to be interested in the project.
