FILMMAKERS TALK SAW SEQUEL & DVD
Moviehole talked to SAW creators James Wan (writer/director) and Leigh Whannell (writer/star), and one of the subjects was the duos involvement in the recently announced SAW 2, which Lions Gate has already announced for a Halloween 2005 release. ‘We dont know exactly know what our full involvement is yet,’ Whannell tells the site. ‘Wed say well be executive producers or overseeing it. Its only in the early stages so I may have a hand in the writing. The film just opened, so it feels kinda early to be talking about a sequel. From the moment it opened at $18.3 [million], the sequel gets greenlit the next day. We havent had time to think about it. But the producers have had time; they find time to talk about the sequel,’ he laughs. Wan adds, ‘I dont think Ill be directing [it].’ On its own, Fango has also learned that the sequel is being adapted from an existing serial-killer script thats being retooled as a direct SAW follow-up to feature the villainous Jigsaw. Meanwhile, Wan and Whannell are deep into preparation on their follow-up film SHHH at Universal.
The pair also reveal that there may be more to the SAW DVD (due Feburary 15). ‘Weve done some stuff for it,’ Wan says, and Whannell adds, ‘I wouldve preferred to have done the commentary after the film got released, though. Its hard to talk about the film until you know how its going to do. How self-deprecating you should be or how much fun you should have. On the commentary its just James and I, but we want to do some moreget some of the actors involved. Its interestingbecause if youre shooting the next STAR WARS film youd know you can shoot all this stuff and have a big special-edition DVD, but we didnt expect SAW to even make it to theaters, so its not like weve been shooting a documentary from day one for the features. Its all happened so quickly that youre kinda asked, What have you got? Ive asked James to put some of his student films on there. Ill make a deal with him; Ill put some IN-ENTERTAINMENT stuff [the E-NEWS-style show on which Whannell was a roving reporter] on there if he puts some of his films in.’
