Filming began this past Monday on a new British/French/Spanish coproduction, EL BOSQUE DE LAS SOMBRAS (English title: THE BACKWOODS), directed by Koldo Serra and produced by Monfort Producciones, Filmax Entertainment and Videntia Frames Producciones (Spain), The Holy Cow (England) and Divine Productions (France). Principal photography will continue for eight weeks in Spain’s Basque country. Serra has won awards with his short EL TREN DE LA BRUJA (THE WITCH’S TRAIN) at Sitges, the Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival and the Festival de Terror de San Sebastián. The cast of his first feature includes Paddy (CLOSE YOUR EYES) Considine, Virginie (THE BEACH) Ledoyen, Gary Oldman and Aitana (THE MACHINIST) Sánchez-Gijón.
The synopsis goes like this: In summer 1978, Lucy and Norman, an English couple whose relationship is going through a rough patch, decide to spend their holidays in a house which their friend Paul and his wife Isabel have bought in the north of Spain. Standing in an isolated spot in the middle of the forest, the house seems the ideal spot for a quiet stay and the chance for Lucy and Norman to sort out their emotional problems. But their idyll is shattered when the couple discover a cabin in the forest in which a girl with horribly deformed hands is imprisoned. Their attempts to take the girl to the police are hampered by the difficulties of the heavily wooded terrain, and by the intervention of a group of villagers who are determined to keep the girl locked away.
