Lucky McKee sat down with FANGORIA at the recent Horrorfind Weekend con for a quick chat about what’s next for the up-and-coming Master of Horror. Although his adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s novel RED seems to have been kiboshed for the time being, fans should keep their eyes peeled for a follow-up to MAY and its companion piece ROMAN (the latter of which debuts on DVD from Echo Bridge March 27). Although this project is pretty top-secret at the moment, Fango was able to wrangle out a few details.
“[Angela Bettis and I] are thinking of doing a third one,” confirms the lanky filmmaker/actor, who guided Bettis through MAY and then took the title role under her direction in ROMAN (pictured). “We’re talking about doing it 50/50, writing and directing it together, which is cool because it will have a little bit of both of us. We believe it’s going to be a story about a guy and a girl, actually—dual protagonists who meet each other.” As to who could potentially star in the movie, McKee becomes uncharacteristically tight-lipped, stating only, “I guarantee you’ll be surprised at the approach.”
He is, however, eager to talk about his newest project, although it is not one you’ll be able to see in theaters. “I’m working on my website right now [www.LuckyMcKee.com], which I’m very excited about. People are really going to dig it. I have thousands of hours of behind-the-scenes material from all the movies we have shot, some of which will be available on the website. Every day we shot on MAY is documented; there is at least an hour of footage from each one. It will give people a chance to see what the family is like that makes these films.”
And finally, something fans have been dying to hear: When asked if ALL CHEERLEADERS DIE, the ultra-low-budget zombie flick he wrote and directed with longtime pal/MAY editor Chris Silverton (currently shooting the Lindsey Lohan chiller I KNOW WHO KILLED ME), will ever be released to the public, McKee gives the one answer all have been waiting for: “Absolutely!” Look for more on McKee and ROMAN on this site soon.
