Back in 1991, an accomplished little psychothriller called THE BOY WHO CRIED BITCH went out in limited release from the Pilgrims 3 company. Directed by Juan José Campanella (who went on to win awards for SON OF THE BRIDE and other features made in his native Argentina) and written/produced by Catherine May Levin, it stars Harley (THE FLY II) Cross as a psychopathic youngster who makes life hell for his mother (Karen Young) and others. Despite strong reviews and a supporting cast of youthful stars-to-be, including Adrien Brody, Moira Kelly, SWIMFAN’s Jesse Bradford and AMERICAN PIE’s Jason Biggs, the film never received domestic video distribution. (Reportedly, no one would pick it up for home release without a title change, which the producers weren’t willing to apply.)
Now, 16 years later, the sequel THE BOY WHO CRIED BITCH: THE ADOLESCENT YEARS has entered release from the rechristened Pilgrims 7 Corporation; it has already played Los Angeles and opens in New York at the Village East Cinema (181 Second Avenue) May 18. Once again scripted by Levin, who also serves as executive producer, the new film was directed by Matthew Levin (we’re not sure if there’s a relation) and stars Adam (7TH HEAVEN) LaVorgna as sociopathic teenager Steve in a scenario evidently unrelated to the original, except thematically. The cast also includes Ronnie Farer as Steve’s mother and Susan Porro as his fellow patient at a mental institution, both of whom become targets of his wrath. THE ADOLESCENT YEARS is already available for purchase on DVD at the movie’s official website, which includes a trailer (actually an extended scene from the film) and other info.
