Red Velvet is a refreshing alternative to today’s onslaught of “torture porn” horror movies. The new film harkens back to famed 80s slasher films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, while paying homage to Mario Bava and Dario Argento’s horror flicks of the 60s and 70s. The movie was shot on 35mm film, rendering the colors and composition even more vivid and arresting in a digital age. The DVD also contains four special extras, including a behind-the-scenes feature that reveals the film’s special effects and actors, an audio commentary with the filmmakers, a 12-minute slideshow cut to Red Velvet’s score by Marc Doten, and Johnny Mac and the Cadillacs’ ‘Maniac’ music video.
