Cube’s Natali Enters High Rise
Not long ago the fiends at Twitch Film pointed their keen eye towards Capri Films and noticed that Cube’s Vincenzo Natali has two new projects in development. One is an animated mini-series version of the disturbing childhood tale Watership Down, the other, an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s 1975 publication High Rise.
In the novel, Ballard – who you should at least know by his work Crash, at least (later adapted by David Cronenberg) – focuses on the friction within a high rise apartment complex where the bonds between neighbors go way beyond broken and the complex’s tenants begin to group together and wage war upon each other.
Natali will write and direct the adaptation for producers Jeremy Thomas (Sexy Beast) and Gabriella Martinelli (Romeo+Juliet). ‘I’ve been working on the script for the last year and it seems to be coming together quite well,’ Natali tells Dread Central. ‘The easiest way to describe it is ‘Lord of the Flies’ in a high-tech high-rise. I’m trying to be faithful to the tone and theme of Ballard’s book, but I am updating it slightly to make it more contemporary. I don’t have a start date, but we are talking about doing it next year.’
