While I’m sure getting to work on Hostel 2 is the first thing on the quick-thinking brain of Eli Roth right now, a recent interview with Really Scary showed that he’s already got some great ideas for, if nothing else, the opening of Cell, the adaptation of the Stephen King book of the same name.
“I’ve always wanted to do a total, full-on, Armageddon zombie apocalypse,” he told the site. “In the zombie movies whenever the moment turns and everyone becomes zombies, you never see it happening all over the world. You always see it on television, news flashes or quick flashes from another country, but you never actually see it like the way Roland Emmerich did it in The Day After Tomorrow. What if you took the Roland Emmerich approach and in the first 20 minutes of the movie, you actually saw everything going completely to hell in a matter of minutes. I want to see cars smashing into each other, people jumping out of buildings, people in movie theaters ripping each others’ throats out. I want to see total chaos and Armageddon around the world.”
Whether or not he’ll be able to do all that remains to be seen, but something tells me it won’t be an issue. Hostel is making its way up the DVD charts already, and Roth’s tracking down Jay Hernandez for the sequel (“Jay’s going to be in it, if I can afford him”). If that does as well as Hostel did, carte blanche on creating a zombie apocalypse will almost be guaranteed. Can’t wait to see it!
