    Fango Sees Rojo Sangre

    FANGO SEES ROJO SANGRE

Fangoria International has acquired the acclaimed Paul Naschy horror thriller ROJO SANGRE for North American DVD distribution. The Spanish film, directed by Christian Molina, will be released early next year. This is the second film picked up for the new label, on which Fango is partnered with Media Blasters.

‘ROJO SANGRE represents a bold and thrilling example of the new wave in Spanish horror,’ Fango video president Steven Mackler says. ‘The film￿s production values are topnotch across the board, especially the acting, direction and effects.’ ROJO SANGRE concerns a faded, downtrodden actor named Pablo Thevenet, who loses his mind and impersonates some of history￿s most notorious maniacs (Jack the Ripper, Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible, etc.) to punish his oppressors.

The Fango team is excited to be collaborating with Naschy on the extras-loaded DVD, which promises to be the biggest release of one of the legendary horror actor￿s films ever attempted in the States. ‘After Christopher Lee, Paul Naschy is the last classic international horror star,’ says Fango editor Tony Timpone, one of the label￿s acquisitions chiefs. ‘Like THEATER OF BLOOD did for Vincent Price, ROJO SANGRE serves as the ultimate expression of Naschy￿s nearly 40-year career in fear. Naschy￿s films have been butchered in the U.S. in the past, with bad dubbing, senseless editing and unnecessary censoring. Thanks to our partnership with Media Blasters, we will finally do Naschy justice.’

‘I￿m very glad about this association and hope that this will be a long collaboration,’ Naschy tells Fango. ‘I know that Fangoria International will do a great release that will be a success for everyone. For me it￿s an honor and prestigious being associated with FANGORIA magazine, because I￿ve admired for a long time the work they have done in support of fantastic cinema.’

As the film￿s writer, Naschy ambitiously strove to deliver a personal and frightening work. ‘I wanted ROJO SANGRE to be a very interesting movie, with a hard mix between the reality of life and fantastic elements￿the devil￿s world,’ he says. ‘I also wanted to represent contemporary Spain and the big lies that plague show business. Horror fans will find in ROJO SANGRE a new vision in a complex genre.’

With ROJO SANGRE, which opened in Spain last spring and made its North American debut at Montreal￿s Fantasia in July, Naschy has created his most memorable character since his long-running wolfman, Waldemar Daninsky. ‘It was important to convey the process of how the failure of a man can drive him to kill,’ he says. ‘For me, the role of Pablo Thevenet was a golden opportunity that￿s rare to find in an actor￿s life.’

Fangoria International￿s premiere release, CHOKING HAZARD (go here for details and see Fango #238, on sale October 21, for a feature article), is now set to debut on special-edition DVD in January. ROJO SANGRE will launch in first quarter 2005. For a Naschy interview, see FANGORIA #234.
