SHELF LIFE WRAPS PRODUCTION
Vancouver-based writer/director/producer Mark Tuit (pictured) has wrapped shooting and is now deep into postproduction on SHELF LIFE, the first feature from his Somnambulist Imagery company. The movie is about a murderer who is struck by a car while pursuing a victim. The unwitting young couple who hit him take him home, and while they try to help him recover, he claims that people are being harvested by humanoid parasitesbut are his rants real or the delusions of a psychopath?
Tuit shot in locations around Vancouver, including Riverview Hospital, a notorious, long-closed asylum that has also played host to THE X FILES and ALONG CAME A SPIDER, among others. The place is supposedly haunted, and Tuit claims that he experienced bizarre phenomena there during shooting. I drove in at 4 a.m. to lead by example to my crew, he says. Having the only key to the hospital, I let myself in and made my way down the labyrinth-like hallway. I heard what sounded like footsteps. Now, the only one who would be there at this ungodly hour would be our 80-year-old liaison Jim, keeper of the place. I stopped in my tracks as not to scare himI didnt want to give him a heart attackand I merely waited until he rounded the corner, so I could greet him with a smile. The steps stopped. Then, behind me, three ceiling tiles crashed to the floor. I froze, terrified to turn around. I began breathing again and slowly backed out of the building. I returned to my car and waited until the 7 a.m. crew call. I never entered the building alone again. As a director, I like to be the first one in and the last one out. Not at Riverview. Safety in numbers is my motto.
