Guillermo del Toro has an awards season to live through before he gets to the next HELLBOY feature. At the time of this writing, his highly acclaimed PAN’S LABYRINTH—a Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film—is making its Hollywood premiere, and del Toro is on the press circuit talking about the film and his future projects, of which there are scores (including a new TARZAN movie, scripted by MASTER AND COMMANDER’s John Collee). Of particular interest is that HELLBOY sequel, subtitled THE GOLDEN ARMY, which has marched into Universal Studios after being dropped by original distributor Sony.
“We are preparing to shoot in May or June, but we don’t start casting until January,” del Toro tells Fango. The script, which tells of an imminent war between the creatures of fantasy and the human race, is currently being scrutinized from a monetary perspective. “We’re still fighting the budget battle, so it could still go on a while before we start. But the difference between the first one and the second film is that you get all of the beats that the first one had, but like any franchise you hope it will bring freshness to the characters. I hope that in a way, we will be reinventing what we did on the first one.”
Leads Ron Perlman in the title role, Selma Blair as fiery Liz and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien are all expected to return, and right now HELLBOY 2 is being eyed for a summer 2008 release. Stay tuned for more updates!
