There have been vocal naysayers ever since it was first announced that Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, best known for writing Tobe Hooper’s Toolbox Murders remake, had been hired by Dario Argento to pen the third and finally Three Mothers movie, now being called The Mother of Tears. Recently famed journalist and Argento expert Alan Jones got his hands on said script, which was polished by Argetno himself, as well, and his thoughts on it should hopefully quiet even the most pessimistic Argentophile.
“The story is full of marvelous moments (the Mother of Tears bleeds jewels that scorch the skin), outrageous gore (one character becomes a demonic buffet while still alive,” he told Dark Dreams. “Someone gets chopped pieces, assorted deaths by medieval torture instruments) and terrific special effects (the Mother licking the tears off crying faces with a giant tongue, Sarah’s guardian angel appearing in powder blown from a compact).” Well, that sounds like a switch from the rather tame giallos the director has been tackling these last few years…
Jones reveals that the mysterious U.S. company who are co-funding the film with Medusa is actually Myriad Pictures, who did Jeepers Creepers 2 among others, but that even with the combined cash of both companies, Mother of Tears is going to be a very large film; “What really scares me about the picture is its sheer scale, ” he contiuned “It’s going to need a lot of money behind it. There’s an elaborate animated ancient text sequence for a start, not to mention the huge Cinecitta sets, and many (Sergio Stivalettii?) scenes that will require extensive CGI augmentation – psychic hallucinations, the demons, a flaming telephone cable stretching for miles, the number of extras involved from the covens of witches gathering in Rome to the ultimate orgy.”
Yeah, that sounds big all right, but Dario’s been doing this long enough I’m sure he can find a way to bring it in at budget. Jones says the narrative is a bit linear and predictable but, like Suspiria and Inferno (the other two Three Mothers films), Mother of Tears will be all about the visuals.
