Robert McKee, perhaps the best known and most respected of today’s screenwriting teachers, is offering a series of genre classes in New York City this weekend, including one on fright films. McKee, who was portrayed by Brian (MANHUNTER) Cox in the Oscar-nominated film ADAPTATION, teaches “the essential principles of screenwriting and story design that studios, production companies and publishers demand from their writers” in his popular seminars. On May 12-15, McKee will teach courses in Horror (on the 12th), Thriller, Comedy and Masterpiece scripting. These classes, which McKee touches on in his book STORY, are invaluable for anyone who wants to learn the inner workings of different types of film, and take place in the Gold Ballroom at Manhattan’s Hotel Pennsylvania (401 Seventh Avenue at 33rd Street). Horror Day will touch on such themes as The Psychology of Horror, Horror Story Patterns, Creating the Horror Antagonist and Protagonist, Tapping the Subconscious and many more, with clips from the likes of THE EXORCIST, THE SHINING and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET shown, plus a complete screening and analysis of the original ALIEN.
