Speaking to Fango at the recent Edinburgh International Film Festival, CANDYMAN director Bernard Rose admits that he is not yet sure of his next move, despite the recent report in Variety that he is due to helm AMUSEMENT for New Line. “Although that was in Variety, I haven’t signed a deal yet,” says Rose, who attended the festival with Lisa Enos, his co-partner in Enos Rose Productions and the female lead of Rose’s latest effort, SNUFF-MOVIE. “If every film that was announced in Variety was made, think how many films there would be every year,” laughs the director.
However, both Enos and Rose do agree on what they would like to do next, if given the opportunity. “I was originally going to direct CANDYMAN 2,” says Rose. “I wrote a sequel, but it was a cannibal movie [reportedly based on Clive Barker’s story “The Midnight Meat Train”] and they were all horrified by it. I sent it to Clive and he said, ‘Pardon me for asking, but where is the Candyman in all of this?’ However, I love that script and I’d really like to make it soon. It’s a brilliant story and it ends with the [British] Queen feasting on the body of prostitutes and throwing their entrails into the fire, while her corgis look on. I think that the cannibal genre needs a comeback.”
Regarding SNUFF-MOVIE, starring Jeroen Krabbe as a director whose filmed murders may be real, Rose admits that the film has had to undergo cuts, solely for scenes of “sexual female nudity,” in order to satisfy the MPAA—but an unrated version is sure to surface on DVD. “I don’t know if it will come out theatrically in America, but I think it will in the UK,” says the director, who adds, “For all the fans tired of PG-13 horror, this is the one you have to get out there and support.” Presently, however, the movie is without an American or British distributor.
