In an interview with our own Anthony C. Ferrante for Julys CINESCAPE magazine, blockbuster filmmaker Dean Devlin (INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA) talked about returning to his genre loving roots with the giant spider flick EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS and lamented some mistakes with a certain Hollywood remake of a Japanese classic.
This has been a movie thats been completely under the radar, but I think people are going to be surprised by it, Devlin told us about FREAKS. But I think people are going to chuckle and have fun. And the spiders are just darn silly. Its an old-fashioned good time at the movies.
He said he found the idea the way a lot of fanboy filmmakers dream of being discovered.
It was done in black and white, very much in the style of those old-fashioned horror movies, said Devlin of a short film, LARGER THAN LIFE sent to him by Ellory Elkayem. It cracked me up, and so I met with Ellory and decided to develop this story of EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS.
Devlin also had the courage to revisit GODZILLA, not the high point of his successful career (which also includes the original STARGATE film).
The worst part of GODZILLA was the script, and I take the responsibility for it because I wrote the script with Roland [Emmerich], Devlin said. It was the first time we ever developed a script at a studio. I am not saying the studio ruined it in development, but I think that the atmosphere of us trying to please them and us trying to deliver what we thought they wanted rather than going off to make the movie we wanted really hurt the script. I am still very proud of the production, what Roland did as a director and even the special effects, which weve taken a lot of heat for, but we broke ground and did stuff that had never been done before with the FX.
