ELI ROTH & CABIN FEVER POSTER
We received an email today from first time director Eli Roth. He just wanted to clear up all the rumours and speculation surrounding the recently posted poster of his upcoming debut feature Cabin Fever (pictured right).
‘I just wanted to let you know you’re totally correct about the CABIN FEVER poster. That poster isn’t ‘new,’ it’s an old one that Lion’s Gate was using to sell the film internationally right after they bought it at Toronto. (They will distribute domestically, but they’re also a sales company, so they sell it internationally.) I like that poster, but you could never get away with that in an American release, since the MPAA rates everything and can revoke your rating if you f#ck with them. I LOVE the release poster Lion’s Gate came up with, especially considering the ridiculous constraints they’re under about what they can or cannot show. A poster like JAWS or SCANNERS would never be allowed today, which is a real tragedy, because you can’t show so much as a bloody nose.
If you ever want to know if a poster is ‘official’ or not, here’s the tell: A FILM BY ELI ROTH will never be on there. In my first meeting with Lion’s Gate I explained that I won’t take that ‘film by’ credit unless one day my name gets embedded into popular culture, the way John Waters or Woody Allen or David Lynch is. If someone completely unconnected to the movie business at some dinner party cuts their finger off and says ‘it’s like something out of an Eli Roth film’ then I’ll take it. But until then I think it’s ridiculous. Lion’s Gate actually removed the ‘film by’ title from the poster, so that one you got a scan of is really, really, really old. You will not see ‘A film By Eli Roth’ or ‘An Eli Roth Film’ anywhere in CABIN FEVER. It says I directed it, and it’s always bothered me when a first time director takes the ‘film by’ credit, because it takes me right out of the film. I think ‘am I supposed to know who the f#ck you are? This is your first movie!’ And then I just want to see if they’re being different for the sake of being different, to show it’s ‘their style.’ All of that bullshit is just so obnoxious and irritating, I just want people to go to the movie and have a fun time and scream their head off and laugh and cover their eyes because if they keep watching the screen they’ll throw up.’
Special thanks to Eli Roth
