WICKER MAN RESURGENCE
*Editor’s note* ‘Riding of the Laddie’ is in fact not a sequel to ‘The Wicker Man’, it’s a brand new film from Robin Hardy that deals with the same types of religious issues the classic film does…sorry for the confusion…-JB
Funny how an obscure film like ‘The Wicker Man’ spurred this huge resurgence of interest in the film again. So much interest that a sequel (gasp!) and a remake (shock!) were discussed amongst the suits of Hollywood.
A sequel is being prepared and Christopher Lee is apparently on board. I hesitate to make everything sound set in stone ’cause the Corner hasn’t heard a peep about this project since we reported a similar story about a year ago.
Sean Astin, Christopher Lee, and Vanessa Redgrave are starring. Original director Robin Hardy and producer Peter Snell are returning to the ‘Wicker’ property as well. An astute reader dropped us this little blurb about the film he found in his recent ‘Lord of the Rings’ fanclub magazine (the April/May issue).
‘Watch for both Astin and Christopher Lee in The Riding of the Laddie, the upcoming sequel to The Wicker Man, a chilling horror flick also starring Vanessa Redgrave.’
So, I guess the project is moving along (?), if so, I’m curious to know more. The original is the ‘terror spectacle’ some critics make it out to be, but it is a deranged little romp. Hell, the title of the sequel alone is very weird. Let’s hope Hardy’s got a nasty little tale up his sleeve. The remake, for those curious about that project, is in development at Universal with Nicholas Cage starring and Neil LaBute directing. Who know where a ‘Wicker’ remake falls into Cage’s busy schedule, but the project may come later down the road.
