Director Roland Emmerich (‘2012’, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’) is set to continue his extremely disturbing interest in end of world or civilisation based filmmaking with his long-awaited sequel to the 1996 alien invasion blockbuster ‘Independence Day’. During this past year both Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin have been hinting at a sequel and even a third installment. ‘Independence Day 2’ had even scored a 2015 release date, however, this has now changed as 20th Century Fox have pushed the release back all the way to 1 July 2016. Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are both reportedly returning for the follow-up although it’s unlikely Will Smith will return as Captain Steven Hiller. The news comes as part of a date shift for a number of upcoming Fox projects including the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot.
