It’s only taken 52 years but the original uncut 98-minute Japanese version of Toho Gojira (Godzilla) is about to get a DVD release – it’s first official home video release of any type in North America – on September 5th.
The original Ishiro Honda science fiction masterpiece (a much darker, more serious metaphorical work than the Western release) would break box office records in Japan in 1954; an Americanized English dubbed version that cut approximately 40-minutes of footage and added new scenes incorporating a young Raymond Burr into it would go onto become a huge hit in the United States in 1956. And thus Godzilla history was born!
After a recent short but successful art house by Rialto Pictures, Classic Media will be releasing a DVD two-pack of both the original 98-minute Japanese language/English subtitled Gojira and the 78-minute English dubbed, Americanized Godzilla, King of the Monsters. Aside from both films being digitally remastered in high definition, no other DVD specs or extras have been announced yet. We do know that the price for the two-disc set will be a paltry $21.98.
Classic Media has set up a website for the DVD release for fans to keep an eye on between now and September 5th for more details on what to expect from the DVD release.
