Midwest horror movie fans can count on a busy upcoming month, with two amazing events in the Chicago area – and you might not survive!
You may have read Cinescapes enthusiastic reports of the events put on by the folks at Flashback Weekend, especially their already legendary Horrorama Drive-In convention. For the past two years, they’ve presented good but standard horror convention features during the day, but the real difference comes at night when their pseudo-drive-in presentation begins. Watching horror flicks out under the stars (as god intended) is a wonderful thing in itself, but somehow there’s the feeling that there might be something missing to make the experience complete: the cars! You might drive in to the parking lot, but then watching outdoor movies on a big screen, even with celebrity guests all around, isn’t quite the same as an actual drive-in theater experience.
So, now they’re giving you the real drive-in experience!
On Saturday, September 24, the historic Hi-Lite 30 Drive-In in Aurora, Illinois, will open early in the afternoon with a horror flea market, a concert featuring Ari Lehman, the first Jason in FRIDAY THE 13th , and his band First Jason. Plus LAST ON THE LEFT’s David Hess will perform some of his tunes. There’ll also be a live spook show and many other attractions, but the main event is saved for when the sun goes down, as Flashback Weekend hosts what may well be the last Dusk-Til-Dawn Drive-In Horror Show! Five big horror features will unspool – EVIL DEAD 2, DEAD & BREAKFAST, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, THE BEYOND and PIECES – plus plenty of vintage drive-in shorts and trailers. It promises to be a screaming good time!

If you manage to survive, you’ll surely have a taste for another all-nighter. Chicago’s Music Box Theatre is a cinema landmark, having survived since the silent film days to become a Mecca for film fans. On October 15, they’ll launch a landmark of their own as they host the Music Box Massacre 24-hour Horror Movie Marathon! And this isn’t just any round the clock screening – they’ve got some choice picks and special events, too. Included in the line-up is the US theatrical debuts of AFTERMATH and PULSE, two skin-crawlers from beyond opposite oceans. There’ll be a screening of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in authentic 3-D, films by Romero, Dante, and Bava, plus amateur shorts by top local talents, a Bur-LIX Carnival of Horrors show, and lots more.
