British novelist David Mitchells’ (not to be confused with Brit funnyman of ‘Peep Show’ fame) third and segmented novel ‘Cloud Atlas’ is being developed for its big screen adaption by Tom Tykwer (‘The International’) and Lana Wachowski and brother Andy Wachowski (of ‘The Matrix’ fame). Natalie Portman was due to appear, but dropped out due to her pregnancy, but it’s the new castings announced that really make this project all the more intriguing. It appears that both Tom Hanks and Halle Berry (below) have been added to the project (at least according to IMDB) to appear as Dr. Henry Goose and Meronym respectively. Check out the complicated synopsis from the original novel below. James McAvoy is rumoured at the moment to play the role of Adam Ewing.
“The novel consists of six nested stories that take us from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last one get interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel “goes back” in time, “closing” each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.”
