Production Weekly reports that Tommy O’Haver and Irene Turner created The Basement, which has just cast Catherine Kenner (Capote, The 40 Year Old Virgin) in the role of Gertrude and Ellen Page (Hard Candy, X-Men: Last Stand) as the young Likens.
O’Haver will direct the shocking true story of a murder that stunned the nation back in the 1960s. It’s the story of Gertrude Baniszewski (Keener), a seemingly ordinary housewife and the mother of seven, imprisons beautiful teenager Sylvia Likens (Page) who has been left in her charge, in the basement of her Indiana home – a setting for subterranean impulses of the most savage and sadistic nature.
The film is based largely on actual court transcripts.
