HORROR-ON-SEA 2017: SEASIDE HORROR WARMS UP WINTER

Horror-on-Sea 2017: Seaside Horror Warms up Winter

This year's festival was held over two weekends in Southend, in the Park Inn by Radisson Palace Hotel. Friday 20 January's standout movie was 'Savageland' (directors: Phil Guidry, Simon Herbert and David Whelan, 2015, US). A prisoner is convicted to die by lethal injection after he is accused of going on a killing spree in his one-horse town. As he's the town loner, the survivors are keen to see him executed. Cinema verite interviews of the local sheriff and other town worthies add uncomfortable realism, as talking heads say there may be no direct motive for the murders but there's also a lot of local hate.

TWISTED LOVE TRIANGLE CAMPAIGN 'NICOLE, HER EX & THE KILLER' KICKS OFF

Twisted Love Triangle Campaign 'Nicole, her Ex & the Killer' Kicks Off

During the month of February for those who may not potentially be spending a lot of their hard earned cash on a romantic Valentines evening with their better half may feel that their generous donations may well be suited helping to fund director Bob X Akins' new psychological horror project 'Nicole, her Ex and the Killer' instead. It's particularly relevant for those who have had bad dating experiences in the past and would rather forget about their exes. With revenge on her mind and freedom in her heart; Nicole's past, present and future comes to a furious collision when her family visits. All donations will go towards the production costs that will cover cast and crew fees as well as location costs, travel and all other props and equipment required for the shoot.

Frozen Fear: Horror With a Little Extra Chill

It’s been another bitterly cold few weeks and one of the pleasures of a chilly cold night is being able to wrap up warm inside, tuck yourself in and put on a good movie. And whilst Jack Frost may be nipping at your nose there’s more dangers lurking in the whiteout of the snow than just the icy weather. There aren’t many places where horror hasn’t delved at some point and there have been plenty that take full advantage of those wintry months and bleak, bracing backdrops.

How Horror Games Give Us The Fright We're Looking For

Horror has been a genre which has fascinated mankind for more than three centuries. Horror fiction dates back to the 18th century, but horror films themselves are a much more recent trend. Horror films began to occupy the mainstream media from the start of the 20th century and now in these fast moving times technology has meant that we have been able to successfully enter a whole new era of horror, especially when it comes to more immersive experiences such as horror video games, which tend to provide more fright than ever before.

Atmosfear: The Attraction of Horror Games

Now let's suppose that you've had a terrible day in the office or at college and the only thing that gets you through the day is the thought of being able to get home and let off some steam. Some people may want to head out to a local bar or club, but that's not always a viable option especially if you want to remain 'in one piece' by the next morning. Some may get in and quite literally be too tired to even go anywhere or communicate with anyone. But you've still got that burning negative energy in you from all the strains and pressures of the day and that's when gamers find their ideal stress relief and are often able to channel it towards fighting their deepest fears and enjoying the latest horror gaming experience.

'DON'T F#CK IN THE WOODS' SAYS NEW INDEPENDENT CREATURE FEATURE

'Don't F#ck in the Woods' Says New Independent Creature Feature

There have been quite a few choice rules when it comes to what you can and can't do in a horror movie. We all fondly remember a fresh faced Jamie Kennedy spouting out specific horror-related rules for when it comes to surviving a horror movie in Wes Craven's genre defining 'Scream' way back in 1996 and since then horror seems intent on showcasing these invariable cliches and conventions and even in some cases creating completely new ones. One thing we have learnt however is what to avoid in horror. Don't run up the stairs to try and escape, don't say you'll be right back and certainly "don't f#ck in the woods"! And writer/director Shawn Burkett certainly hasn't shied away from that last rule with his new project which isn't pulling any punches whatsoever. DON'T F#CK IN THE WOODS is the awesomely memorable title of his new independent horror project and here's some more about the upcoming creature feature. Head below to check out the poster and images from the movie.

ENTERING THE NEXT LEVEL OF FEAR

Posted: 23 November, 2016 at 02:01 AM GMT
Entering the Next Level of Fear

Horror games are all about being immersed. You need to feel like you're right there in Silent Hill, the Spencer Mansion or wherever, so that you can truly empathise with the character you play. The more you feel threatened and scared, the better the experience. This can be tough to do when you're separate from the character you play who's on your TV or monitor, but with VR you are placed right in the middle. You will be in those scary locations, hear strange sounds and you will be the victim, the prey and the haunted. This will make the game more real and help to elevate horror to the next level.

A Trio of New Cast Members Head to AMC's 'The Terror'

'The Walking Dead' and spin-off series 'Fear the Walking Dead' have been hugely successful for AMC and so it comes as no surprise, especially with all the other horror-related shows out there currently vying for ratings, that the network is keen to have another genre based project in the works. Showrunners David Kajganich and Soo Hugh are heading up 'The Terror' a new anthology drama series set at sea. The project is based on the bestselling novel by author Dan Simmons and a new trio of faces have been added to the cast list. British stars Edward Ashley ('In the Heart of the Sea') and Liam Garrigan ('Once Upon a Time') have joined the project along with Irish star Ronan Raftery who plays Langdon Shaw in the new 'Harry Potter' prequel 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'.

GETTING SERIOUSLY SCARED: TRANSYLVANIAN TALKS (AND JAM)

Getting Seriously Scared: Transylvanian Talks (and Jam)

The Bram Stoker Film Fest 2016 got its eighth annual event off to its customary early start at on Thursday 27 October at 1030am with "Tales of Fear". This US feature-length of six horror shorts (director: Corey Logsdon), based on 1950s horror comics set in Smalltown, USA. Although carefully atmospheric, like most 50s horror, it was entertainingly hammy rather than creepy, although there was a good short on a child murderer who has the tables turned on him by his latest victims. Spanish short "Three Wise Monkeys" (dir: Miguel Angel Font), was a take on the "hear no evil, see no evil" saying when the ornamental monkey takes on a life of its own.

SERIAL KILLER HORROR SHORT SIMON GOES FEATURE LENGTH

Posted: 3 November, 2016 at 21:28 PM GMT
Serial Killer Horror Short SIMON Goes Feature Length

SIMON is the latest horror feature project from British writer/director Warren Badenski and it's a real love letter to classic 80's horror. The movie is based on the filmmakers' previous short horror film of the same name which has been expanded into this feature length effort. This expansion also managed to see the movie itself change from just a simple slasher-themed outing, in a similar vein to that of classic's such as 'Friday the 13th', and evolve during development into a much more story orientated horror experience like that of 'Hellraiser' or even 'Silence of The Lambs'. The movie stars Chris Bell and Katie Alexander-Thom who reprise their roles from the original short as well as Lexi Wolfe, Emma McMorrow, Nathaniel Francis and Dean Martin. SIMON is now available worldwide on VOD as well as on DVD across the US and you can head below to check out the trailer.

ZOMBIE MOVIES THAT HELPED THE GENRE EVOLVE

Posted: 31 October, 2016 at 19:38 PM GMT
Zombie Movies that Helped the Genre Evolve

Before George A. Romero’s cult status, and with it the cult status of the great zombie film, was defined by the classic, genre changing movie Night of the Living Dead, Hollywood had seen only a smattering of early concept zombie flicks. So far removed, both aesthetically and tonally, from what we’d consider the norm in today’s age of The Walking Dead that we’ve lost touch with the origins and evolution of the sub-genre. It’s become so ingrained in the cultural zeitgeist that your average zombie viewer probably couldn’t even tell you what Night of the Living Dead was.
