MAN OR DEVILMAN?
Not sure how many of you out there follow Japanese cinema too closely, but a live action version of the popular Devilman cartoon has been gearing up for a while now, and the trailer has finally appeared online.
Devilman was created by mangaka (manga artist) Go Nagai in 1972 for the comic of the same name and was also adapted as an animated TV series in Japan soon after that. The violent content was toned down quite a bit for that TV series so 3 OVA (Original Video Animation) were made in 1987, 1990 and 2001 that were a lot more violent and nihilistic. The first two of those were also released in the US by Manga Video and are currently out on DVD.
Now the Japanese decided to do a live action adaptation, probably inspired by the success of many US superhero film in the last few years. The film, which is being directed by the relatively unknown Hiroyuki Nasu, was in the news quite a bit when they cast hulking Japanese wrestler Bob Sapp in a small role. There has also been some controversy about the rumored replacement of the original practical effects/suits by tons and tons of CGI, though that still remains a rumor.
