    10 MINUTES OF DAWN REVIEW

The Pasadena ComicCon, held over this past weekend, catered to the horror fans in a big way by unspooling the first ten minutes of Universal’s Dawn of the Dead remake. There was apparently some Hellboy goodness in abundance as well, but until we get a report on what happenings went down for that film, we’re gonna have to kick back with these short and sweet thoughts on the opening moments of Dawn witnessed by a Creature Corner reader…

Spoilers? There are some, but I’ve added his thoughts first and the synopsis last.

‘I saw the first 10 minutes of the new Dawn of the Dead at the LA ComicCon this weekend in Pasadena. I must say, I was worried about the classic being remade, but after seeing the first ten or fifteen minutes of the show, I’m more anxious to see this than any other movie this year.

You’re going to shit when you see how this thing opens. Oh my god the opening is insane.

The only problem is, this version might taint how we view the original after seeing the new one. No longer are the blue faced slow walking zombies going to seem scary – the remake might make them look rather campy and silly. Time will tell.

    Here’s what went down…

Mother and daughter talk in the street as daughter is out playing on bike or roller blades (can’t remember), after a brief exchange, we end up with a scene of mother and father talking which leads to a romantic interlude in the shower. Too bad for them they can’t hear the breaking news report coming in over the television. Later the next morning, young blonde daughter walks into mom and dad’s bedroom and as the lights come on, dad notices daughter’s mouth is bloody and down right nasty. As he rushes over to see what’s wrong, he gets a quick and deadly bite from his little girl. Before mom can register what’s happening she throws the little girl violently down the hall locking the door. Just moments after dad has taken a shot to the neck, he’s turned into a flesh craving zombie.

A brief struggle ensues reminding me a little of the Shining’s ‘Here’s Johnny’ scene as mom safely makes her way out side. Unfortunately, all the neighbors have gone crazy, not sure who’s a zombie and who’s not, people are shooting friends and not saving others. No blue faces here to let you know who’s friend and who’s foe. As mom gets to her car, dad finally gives chase. Here’s where the story goes from good to great. I will not give anything away at this point, but keep an eye on dad running behind the car ala Robert Patrick in T2. Great stuff. The helicopter shot that soon follows is one of those great shots usually only found in big budget non-horror films.

There you have it. Director Zack Snyder, who was around for the screening, also said the film will have its ‘R’ rating…’

Dawn of the Dead opens March 19th. You can check out the film’s official website here.
