DREAMWORKS EYE LOVELY BONES
Ever since its release, THE LOVELY BONES has been a darling in DreamWorks’ eye. Alice Sebold’s novel of a murdered fourteen-year-old girl who watches her family grieve for her from up in Heaven was a New York Times bestseller, and the buzz was that none other than Steven Spielberg himself was thinking about directing the movie version of Sebold’s story. There was just one large stumbling block: the rights to the book were owned by FilmFour, a British production house, and not DreamWorks.
Now there seems to be some movement towards a resolution. Today’s issue of Variety states that Aimee Peyronnet, a former exec at FilmFour, has closed a two-year deal with DreamWorks. That opens the door for Spielberg’s studio to possibly pick up the movie and have Peyronnet onboard as one of the film’s producers. Back when FilmFour was still alive and kicking, director/writer Lynne Ramsay was attached to adapt THE LOVELY BONES as a movie. Ramsay remains attached to the project.
It’s all part of a project’s slow forward movement in the Hollywood machine. After all, it ain’t called development hell for nothing.
