LOST THINGS POSTER & INTERVIEW

‘Having spent most of the year on either a plane or at a hotel concierge desk, a few Aussie flicks seemed to have past me by. Predominatly, ‘Sommersault’. I talked to young Abbie Cornish about the film earlier in the year, at a point when she wasn’t even sure what was going to happen to it, and then later on, September, I fly back into Australia and hear that not only has it been released but it’s tipped to scoop the AFI awards – which it consequently did.
While in a different league, the local horror pic ‘Lost Things’, is another bit of homegrown celluloid I’ve heard a thing or two about lately. Written by Stephen Sewell, of ‘The Boys fame, and starring Lenka Kripac (who also sings with Decoder Ring), Charlie Garber, Leon Ford, Alex Vaughan and Steve Le Marquand, it tells of four teenagers who head off for a weekend of surfing and discover that they’re not the only ones at the seemingly isolated beach. The spine tingles…
‘ISM Films’ have supplied us with a look at the theatrical poster for the film, as well as this rather amusing interview with Director Martin Murphy.
An interview with Martin Murphy, interviewed by himself, because it felt like a good idea at the time.
Interviewer: So tell us Marty, what made you want to make a horror film?
Marty: Well thats a very good question and Im glad I asked it. Ive always loved Horror films. The first film that I ever saw at a cinema was a pirate movie, I think it was Treasure Island, and all I remember was this creepy scene in which a hooded figure waits on a small bridge in the rain. Another character approaches the bridge. The two men meet in the middle and there is this closeup of a dagger being pulled out. The hooded figure stabs the other guy and the knife comes out bloody and shiny. I was about five years old and I was freaked out and exhilarated. I was with my Dad and I thought that it was the most exciting event of my life to that point, apart from maybe getting a G.I. Joe action figure with a helicopter for Christmas that I could never quite assemble but loved anyway.
Interviewer: So what are you saying? Did that movie disturb you as a child and give you some sort of weird knife fixation?
Marty: No not at all. And I resent the implication actually. You want to watch your mouth son.
Interviewer: Sorry. Dont go beating yourself up about it man. I just wanted to get some insight into your creative process.
Marty: No no thats okay. I guess I just over reacted. What I will say about it is that I referenced that bloody knife closeup in my graduate film NIGHTRIDE which I made while I did the Directing course at AFTRS in 1996. If you watch the film, which you can still see on the net I think, there is a closeup when the Masked killer stabs the bus driver. I thought of that Pirate movie when I set that shot up.
Interviewer: Great Ill check it out.
Marty: No you wont. Thats bullshit. Youve already seen the movie. Youre just saying that because youre interviewing me.
Interviewer: Youre right. Maybe we should stop before this gets out of hand. Well thanks for the interview anyway.
