BALFOUR TALKS ABOUT REMAKE
A little like Se7en? Sounds appealing. Beautiful? I don’t know. Not a ‘teen-horror’ thing? Now Eric’s talking!……
Zap2it ran an interview with Texas Chainsaw Massacre star Eric Balfour recently, check it out….
‘Beautiful’ might not be the word that automatically comes to mind while thinking of the upcoming remake of the 1974 gorefest ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’
‘But that’s just the word used by star Eric Balfour (’24,’ ‘Six Feet Under’), taking a break in sunny but cold Toronto while filming his ABC series, ‘Veritas: The Quest,’ which premieres Jan. 27.’
‘Our ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ is going to be one of the most beautifully shot horror movies ever,’ he says, giving all credit to cinematographer Daniel Pearl, who shot the original, written and directed by Tobe Hooper.’
‘Daniel Pearl is one of the most brilliant directors of photography I’ve ever seen,’ says Balfour. ‘It starts with this journey of five kids on a road trip. Very beautiful, first part of the film, landscapes of Texas. It’s gorgeous; they’re young. As the film goes on, you just see it start to degrade, become more decrepit, darker, even the film itself starts to look different.’
‘By the end of the movie, it looks like ‘Seven’ or something. It’s very cool. And Marcus Nispel, he’s a great director.’
‘Produced by Michael Bay (‘Pearl Harbor,’ ‘Armageddon’), the new version of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ doesn’t aim to slavishly ape the original, although the basic storyline about young travelers running afoul of cannibals remains intact. ‘
‘When I talked to Michael about it and I talked to Marcus,’ Balfour recalls, ‘they wanted to make a definitive film. They didn’t want to make some teen-horror thing.’
‘Set to be released this October, the film also stars Jessica Biel (‘Summer Catch,’ ‘Rules of Attraction,’ ‘7th Heaven’), Jonathan Tucker (‘The Virgin Suicides’), Erica Leehrsen (‘The Guardian’), Mike Vogel (‘Grounded for Life’) and actor R. Lee Ermey.’
‘The cast was amazing,’ Balfour says. ‘Me and Jessie sat around talking, we wanted it to be the horror movie of our generation, the way ‘Poltergeist’ was or ‘Exorcist’ was or ‘Halloween’ was. We didn’t want to bastardize the genre.’
