ENGLUND TALKS LAST HORROR PICTURE SHOW
FANGORIA caught up with Robert Englund a couple of weeks back at San Diego Comic Con and got the scoop from him exclusively on his new post-FREDDY VS. JASON project, THE LAST HORROR PICTURE SHOW (first mentioned on Fangoria.com HERE) to be directed by Gary Jones off a script from Jones and the original Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen.
‘It’s like BLAIR WITCH meets the source material for TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE,’ Englund enthuses. ‘It’s a great script. It’s about snotty Texas film students overweight, Kevin Smith slacker-types from Austin go out doing their documentary about these guys that were the source material for TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and are using not the original locations, but sites specific to the original crimes. The original perpetrators are so angry that they never got a piece of the action that they kidnap these film students and make them make a movie. They’ve written a script! They’re Hollywood wannabes and it’s this great black comedy. It’s like NEW NIGHTMARE meets BLAIR WITCH meets I don’t know!’
With Hansen on board and that kind of plot, one would expect that Leatherface might make something of an appearance, but in LAST HORROR PICTURE show, it’s a bit skewed. ‘It’s wonderful, but it’s not really Leatherface and the gang, but they’re a lot like them just real,’ jokes Englund. ‘The great in-joke is that they’re all wannabe auteurs now. They’re talking misc-en-scene and all of that. You can imagine Leatherface with a clapboard – that’s an image being ordered around and then not knowing how to do it, hurting himself and getting really mad!’
Englund, who stays busy almost year-round, has three projects coming LAST HORROR PICTURE SHOW, the TWO THOUSAND MANIACS remake being helmed by Tim Sullivan and a role in the upcoming V revival on NBC where Englund will be reprising his role of the vegetarian alien, Willie. ‘I don’t have a date on this, but I can’t do all three of those projects!’ exclaims Englund. ‘I can, but [someone’s] going to have to wait for me. I guess V is going to be later, so I might be able to knock off one of these this year. V is definitely 2004.’
