GODZILLA GETS 50th U.S RE-RELEASE
GOJIRA, the 1954 Japanese classic that was Americanized into GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS, will finally be released to U.S. screens in its original form by Rialto Pictures next year. As all kaiju fans know, the movie had about 40 minutes cut and new scenes starring Raymond Burr added for its Stateside edition; this 50th-anniversary reissue restores director Ishiro Honda’s original, much darker cut, in which the monster is a clearer metaphor for the horrors of nuclear weaponry. New prints will be struck, sporting a fresh translation and subtitles, and will be accompanied by an all-new marketing campaign. GODZILLA will stomp into New York and other cities in spring 2004.
