HELLBOY CHAT & BANNERS
In a recent panel held at the Texas Wizard World convention, director Guillermo del Toro described the HELLBOY trailer released last week as the ‘laymans trailer.’ ‘Which is for those people who don’t know Hellboy, and there must be a few, and for those people who will react to the word ‘hell,’ as there will be.’ Adding, ‘We decided to do a basic trailer that would show the organization, and not only showcase Hellboy. What you get is a taste of that.’
Revolution Studios picked up the project and gave del Toro the $60 million to develop it, plus allowing him to cast Ron Perlman in the lead, with the studio proving to be the proverbial exception to the rule after other studios such as Universal asked him if the character could be a regular guy and then turn into Hellboy when he becomes angry (and bear in mind this is the same studio that made Hulk), while another wanted The Rock for the role.
The director also said, ‘We are about 10 percent through the visual effects right now. And the next trailer you’ll get is going to be a 30-second spot on the Super Bowl, and you’ll get a few more monsters and a few more weird images. And hopefully by then the audience will be familiar. The first thing we want people to do is go, ‘Hellboy?’ Then, eventually get them to know that this is a character-driven movie – and this character drives better.’
Del Toro, who is providing the voices for the characters of Baby Hellboy, Kroenen and the monster Sammael in the film as well, said he told Hellboy creator Mike Mignola that he wanted to make it The Last Emperor of cheesy monster movies.
In more del Toro and Hellboy news, SuicideGirls.com has a great interview with the man himself, regarding the 10th anniversary DVD release of CRONOS, in which the director talks about ‘being fat, Mike Mignola’s artwork and of course pornography’. Its a very funny, candid interview so make sure you check it out right here.
