Over at ActorsSpot.com, actor Duane (PULP FICTION) Whitaker talks about his role in John Gulager’s upcoming FEAST, and why you didn’t see much of him in the PROJECT GREENLIGHT series that chronicled the film’s production. “I was hiding through most of it,” he tells the site. “I just tried to do my work and back up John when I could. I was sort of the redheaded stepchild on this film. The only person who wanted me on it was Gulager, which is usually a good thing but in this case, it wasn’t so good. The casting director—we don’t have to say her name—really disliked me and went out of her way to keep me out. When she couldn’t do that, she made a really bad deal for me as far as money and billing. It was really unfortunate.”
Nonetheless, Whitaker has generally positive memories of shooting FEAST, in which he plays one of a group of people besieged at a remote bar by a flock of predatory monsters. “It was good overall,” he says. “I mean, I got to play a great role in a movie that I think turned out really well. The thing works; you never know if that’s going to happen or not. I was given a lot of space to work in. John trusted me to bring things to the table. The writers [Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton] were there and I would bounce things off them. On the show you got the impression nobody liked the script. That’s bullshit. That script kicked ass from the start, or at least a pretty early draft that I read. Very clever and very effective as a horror script. I’m very grateful to John for this—bottom line is, I wouldn’t have been in the film if it weren’t for him.”
