New British horror flick ‘Salvage’ has just begun rolling and it marks the feature debut of director Lawrence Gough. ‘Salvage’ is one of 3 movies that has been commissioned through the Digital Departures initiative which will see films funded, made and premiered in Liverpool as part of that city’s 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations.
‘Salvage’, interestingly enough, gets its premise from a news item that made headlines here in the UK last year. For those not in the know, and those who remember, a container ship got into storm difficulties and shed its load on nearby beaches, causing wholesale looting. Director Gough felt this would make a great concept for a horror movie, explaining to Fango, “I thought it would be really interesting to have a shipping container washed up on a beach with something terrible inside it.”
Screenwriter Colin O’Donnell worked with Gough to develop the idea and decided to to set the action within a cul-de-sac, plunging the residents into a horrifying world of violence, terror and paranoia. Quarantined by the military and ordered to stay indoors, a single mother must overcome all the odds to save her daughter from the danger within. “We loved the idea of the characters being contained too,” Gough notes, “and of a woman desperately trying to rescue her child.”
‘Salvage’ will feature some new British faces and is lead by Neve McIntosh (‘Gormenghast’), Shaun Dooley (‘Eden Lake’), Dean Andrews and Linzey Cocker.
