Ok let’s recap. ‘The Returned’ (AKA ‘Les Revenants’) is a French horror series from Fabrice Gobert, which in turn is based upon Robin Campillo’s 2004 French movie ‘They Came Back’. ABC’s ‘Resurrection’, although extremely similar in its premise, is based upon the novel ‘The Returned’ by American author Jason Mott. So if you’re still following then A&E have thrown another hat into the mix by ordering a new 10-part US remake based of ‘Les Revenants’. I really don’t think US networks give their American audiences much credit whatsoever when it comes ot foreign imports. The original French series (which will continue later this year) is such a fantastic piece of TV which is incredibly compelling and flawlessly acted why a remake even needs to be considered is beyond me. Instead of plugging money into an unnecessary redo how about reeducating audiences instead. ‘Bates Motel’ showrunner Carlton Cuse (‘Lost’) has penned the first episode and wil co-produce along with Raelle Tucker (‘True Blood’).
Here’s the original premise from the French series which will return with a second season later this year:
“In an idyllic French mountain town, a seemingly random collection of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back. As they struggle to reintegrate with their families and past lovers, buried secrets emerge and new mysteries develop as they grapple with a miraculous and sinister new reality. But it seems they are not the only ones to have returned from the dead. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders which bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past.
Cuse wrote the first episode, and he and Raelle Tucker (True Blood) will write and executive produce the supernatural/suspense series, a co-production between A+E Studios and FremantleMedia North America, with three scripts already completed.”
