Variety reports that director David R. Ellis, who’s got SNAKES ON A PLANE landing in theaters August 18 from New Line, has been signed to direct ASYLUM for Hyde Park Entertainment. No relation to either the 1972 Amicus anthology or the recent Natasha Richardson-starring drama, this ASYLUM was scripted by Ethan Lawrence and is set in a college dormitory where some of the students discover that the building was once a notorious mental institution. The reported synopsis ends there, but presumably the crazed spirits of the past return to cause mischief in the present. The movie is set to roll later this year; Hyde Park is also behind the Sandra Bullock-starring psychic thriller PREMONITION, which TriStar releases March 9, 2007, and DEATH SENTENCE, based on novelist Brian Garfield’s follow-up to DEATH WISH and set to be directed by SAW’s James Wan for Fox release. See Fango #255, on sale July 11, for an extensive SNAKES ON A PLANE set visit.
