Writer, producer and co-director Jim O’Rear got in touch to give us the lowdown on his upcoming straight-to-DVD flick THE DEEPENING, which he says “is an outrageous and ugly horror story that just happens to be an entertaining escape opportunity for the audience.”
Scripted by O’Rear from an idea by Ted Alderman (who also serves as co-director and producer) and “based on actual events,” the Wicked Dreams/Allied Horror flick stars Gunnar (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) Hansen, scream queen and FANGORIA RADIO cohost Debbie Rochon (pictured below) and Debbie D as well as O’Rear and Alderman, in a tale which “follows a troubled New York fireman who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after the tragic events of 9/11,” O’Rear says. “In search of a fresh start, he relocates to a small fire department in a quiet rural town, where he seeks treatment for his recurring nightmares. The bad dreams, however, do not subside. Instead, they turn into a terrifying reality as the population of the town begins to sharply decrease.”
Filmed in Nashville and Watertown, Tennessee in 2006 with FX provided by (apparent jacks of all trades) Alderman and O’Rear, the movie employs a “gritty camera style and exploitative feel of the late 1970s/early 1980s slasher flicks,” according to the latter. Boobs, blood and ax-murders abound: “We’re not going for art here.”
To be released March 4 by Phoenix Entertainment on its Under The Bed label and retailing for $19.99, THE DEEPENING disc will contain a letterboxed transfer, a feature-length behind-the-scenes documentary, a blooper reel, deleted scenes and an original trailer.
