It’s looking like a bloody October this year. With horror “hot” once again, an overwhelming number of spooky releases are headed to DVD and theaters next month, but it’s rare that the competition gets so intense that a movie studio releases two films in the same genre on the same day.
On October 28, Lions Gate Films joins the fight for Halloween weekend tickets, competing with the likes of the already released DOOM, JACQUELINE HYDE, THE FOG and CURSE OF THE WERERABBIT with SAW II, the sequel to their sleeper hit of 2004. Yes, the Jigsaw Killer is back, playing his sick psychological games, and this time his opponent is police detective Donnie Wahlberg.
You may already have this marked on your calendar as a must-see, but in many markets SAW II will be in direct competition with another horror flick in limited release from Lions Gate. They’ll also be bringing us the US release of the Asian hit horror anthology THREE EXTREMES. The concept here is to bring three hot Asian directors from different countries together to direct a trio of cutting-edge horror segments: Fruit Chan (HOLLYWOOD HONG KONG), Takashi Miike (AUDITION, ONE MISSED CALL) and Park Chan-wook (OLDBOY, JOINT SECURITY AREA).
All right, so it’s not as if Fox put out STAR WARS and ALIEN sequels on the same day, but it should make for some tough decisions for horror fans at the multiplex this Halloween.
For over 20 years the Horror Asylum has continued to bring you the very best genre news, reviews, giveaways and interviews in the horror world.
