With Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion masterpiece THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS returning to theaters in an updated 3-D version on October 20, MTV now reports that a special two-CD release of NIGHTMARE composer Danny Elfman’s song score will coincide with the rerelease.
The film, while considered a disappointment by Disney during its initial run ($50 million at the box office), went on to generate not only a merchandising bonanza upon its home-video bow the following year, but also a rabid fan base, which (not surprisingly) included shock rocker Marilyn Manson. It’s no wonder, then, that when Disney asked Manson whether he would be interested in providing a cover version of one of NIGHTMARE’s songs for the double disc, the answer was a resounding yes. The result? Manson’s own version of the raucous opening track “This is Halloween” will appear on the special-edition soundtrack, as will additional covers by such bands as Fall Out Boy (performing “What’s This?”), Panic! at the Disco (delivering their own take on “This is Halloween”) and She Wants Revenge (performing “Kidnap the Sandy Claws”), with songstress Fiona Apple contributing a cover of “Sally’s Song.”
While a release date and price have yet to be announced, the music site does reveal that the set will include (in addition to Elfman’s 10 original songs) two demo versions of songs from the film: “Making Christmas” and “Oogie Boogie’s Song.”
