Variety reports that Rose McGowan, whose credits include SCREAM and both halves of the upcoming GRINDHOUSE, will play ’50s B-movie actress Susan Cabot in BLACK OASIS, which will be scripted and directed by Stephan (THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA…) Elliott. Based on an article from Premiere magazine by John H. Richardson, the movie will track Cabot’s life from her stardom in Roger Corman films like THE WASP WOMAN, WAR OF THE SATELLITES and VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT through her murder by her own son Timothy in 1986 at the age of 59. “This is story in the ‘stranger than fiction’ style of HOLLYWOOD BABYLON, and a little-known chapter in the seedy underbelly of that era,” Hilary Shor (who’ll produce with Tony Smith) tells the trade.
At Elliott’s unofficial fansite, the writer/director is quoted from iF Magazine as saying that Cabot’s life “is one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever come across. What a life. I hate biopics, I can’t stand them, but the more I read about that woman, what an extraordinary journey that is. [The script is] about as out there as you could possibly get. People will look at that story and say you’re lying. I don’t know if the marketplace is ready for it; I hope it is. Everything actually happened to this person.”
