OPEN THE NEW NECRONOMICON
H.P. Lovecraft fans anxious to read Dan OBannons upcoming ‘definitive’ NECROMONICON (discussed in Fango #239, on sale this month) can in the meantime check out another new edition of the legendary cursed book, Donald Tysons NECROMONICON: THE WANDERINGS OF ALHAZRED. Unlike previous NECROMONICON editionswhich, according to Tyson, havent been faithful enough to Lovecrafts Cthulhu mythosthis exhaustively researched volume reproduces and connects the details of the mythology originally created by the eldritch author. It addresses all of Lovecrafts references to the book and its fictional protagonist/writer, Arab scholar Abdul Alhazred, ‘the mysterious Necromancer of Yemen.’ Tysons ‘grimoire’ (as Lovecraft referred to the evil book) chronicles all of Alhazreds mysterious and sometimes horrifying journeys as he travels to strange, exotic places like the lost city of Irem, the ruins of Babylon and Damascus. Lovecraft devotees will recognize threatening creatures like The Old Ones, whom Alhazred encounters on his voyages.
Tyson is certainly familiar with the Western occult, having written two novels and more than a dozen non-fiction books exploring subjects such as the Kabbalah, divination and ceremonial magic. He even assisted the U.S. Department of Defense in decoding rune symbols! His NECRONOMICON debuts this month from the Llewellyn company, with a $17.95 retail price.
