Three years after setting the rolling boulder of self-promotion and success named Eli Roth in motion—not to mention bathing multiplex audiences in some much-needed blood—CABIN FEVER is lubed up and ready to spring a sequel. Fango was the first to bring you the scoop when we announced that Roth and FEVER producer Lauren Moews have tapped THE ROOST’s Ti West to direct the next installment. And Fango have got a few more details from Moews, who gave Fango a call of confirmation as well as an assurance to the fans that this sequel will not be a rehash of the first film’s sticky events.
“The sky’s the limit with this one,” Moews tells us. “Ti really gets the material. I think he might be the only guy who can convey Deputy Winston [played by Giuseppe Andrews in the original] in a sequel,” she laughs teasingly, though the producer is not willing to spill more of her guts about the follow-up’s plot details. Shucks. OK, so why the heck did it take so long to get FEVER 2 going? “The fans and their worries,” she replies. “They instinctively pick up on the troubles we face when doing sequels, Eli and I are adamantly against a rehash, so that’s a battle we faced and one that takes a while. Of course, this is another indie film that Lionsgate will distribute, so I had to pull together financing as well, and that takes time.”
Though she won’t share the sequel’s storyline, Moews does reveal a recent incident stemming from the script’s nature that has posed a bit of a predicament. For the original film, Roth, Moews and their cast and crew ventured to North Carolina to take advantage of the scenic environs. However, this time, “We got turned down by the state of North Carolina!” Moews says. “They do these incentive programs [for film productions] and their decisions are not supposed to be based on content, but they don’t want us anywhere near their state. They had us approved until we sent the script in. Based on the content of our film alone, they don’t want us around—so that’s a good sign! We’re probably the only group of filmmakers who have come in on a sequel to an extremely successful horror movie, during a time where everyone’s making horror movies, to still get turned down. Apparently we’ve clearly offended the Bible Belt.”
Well, if you’re going to offend anyone, might as well make it them. CABIN FEVER 2 begins casting as soon as West wraps up work on his sophomore effort TRIGGER MAN. Keep it here for the latest…
