Variety writes:
Spyglass Entertainment has set Tony Award winner Dan Fogler to star in comedy “Spanky Johnson: Monster Hunter” after preemptively snapping up David Berenbaum’s spec script.
Story revolves around a man who has been ridiculed his entire life for having a father who claims to be a monster hunter. But when his father dies and he takes over the unusual business, he learns it may not be a lie after all.
Producers are Spyglass’ Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman. Derek Evans and Fogler exec produce.
Berenbaum (“Elf”) came up with the idea for “Monster” and approached Fogler, who quickly attached himself to the project. Each is rumored to have cut a seven-figure deal with Spyglass.
“Any comedy depends on a star vehicle, and I think Dan can really drive this movie,” Berenbaum told Daily Variety. “He’s hilarious.”
It’s the second Spyglass project in which Fogler is starring. Last fall, he signed on for “Balls of Fury,” which Spyglass is producing for Rogue Films.
Fogler, who won his Tony for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” inked deals to star in the Weinstein Co.’s “Fanboys,” the Todd Phillips-directed “School of Scoundrels” and indie pic “The Marconi Brothers.” He’ll also provide the lead voice for Disney animated pic “Rapunzel Unbraided.”
Berenbaum wrote Sony Pictures’ upcoming “Zoom,” produced by Revolution Studios and Underground Films. He also penned the script for Mark Waters’ upcoming “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” which Paramount will release.
Most recently, Spyglass produced and co-financed Disney’s “Stick It.”
